Subject: [aprssig] Beacon Doesn't

Has anyone here had any experience using the AX25 'beacon' program?

I'm trying to get it to work on a new box I'm configuring for telpac, and
for some reason it doesn't seem to be functioning correctly. I can see the
TNC/radio transmit, and I can hear the packet by ear; but, my other TNC
setup (TNC-X) can't seem to decode it, and no other station close to me
sees the packet either. I know it's not a problem with the kernel drivers
themselves, or the TNC (a KPC3+ in KISS mode) or the radio, because I can
connect to telpac from my other TNC/radio/computer, other stations can
connect, and my mheard list shows lots of current activity on the channel
(we're using 144.95).

I'm not seeing any errors in SYSLOG or anywhere else.

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated!

It would depend entirely on the mapping software but if it understands
GPWPL sentences, there's no need for external TNCs or splitting the GPS
cable to get mapping to work while the D700 is in APRS mode.

When in APRS mode, the serial port is still active. It will spit out each
station heard as a NEMA GPWPL sentence up to the GPS but also back towards
a computer. This is as long as you've done two things. One, enable the GPS
on the unit including uploading received posits. Two, you need to be sure
to issue the "AI 1" (alpha india one) command to the D700 through its
serial port. This is the "Auto Information" mode of the D700. It will
echo back every command you send and anything the radio is doing. So if
the GPS sends a position sentence to the D700, that will appear on the
D700's serial port if AI is turned on. If a posit is received, the D700
will split it and send GPWPLs to both the GPS port and the serial port.

I've used it before, never had any trouble with it that I can recall.
Other than maybe having the audio level set too high on the KPC-3, which
caused problems with some receiving TNCs.

Try a really short packet. And keep in mind that the default destination
is IDENT, which might not show up on an APRS program.

I use BEACON all the time to transmit objects.

#! /bin/bash
/usr/sbin/beacon -c N0YXV -d APJI23 -s radio ";146.94 *`date
'+%H%M%S'`z4055.55N/09821.75Wr 146.94- Tone123 Link24&18"

(Script has only two lines incase it gets word wrapped in email.) The blank
spaces between the .94 and the * have to be there.

It would be nice to include in all such RF objects, the PHG string so that
these repeaters show up on APRS maps displaying their relative RF range.
Antenna Elevation is one of the most important parameters in VHF Ham Radio
and is fundamental information to the APRS user.

Just a thought.

A maritime GPS/Chart plotter, getting NMEA IN from the D700, will do that.
Like e.g. the eTrex Vista is doing, only with a larger display.

Ok, I was thinking about this recently, I want to do exactly this with the
SEARG Voice Repeater Network. At the moment I've just put an Object into
Digi_ned so that when anyone query's it, it will return the object

;EI7MLR-0 *131122z5237.06N/00646.71Wr430.960 +7.6

So what your saying is that I should change this to
;EI7MLR-0 *131122z5237.06N/00646.71Wr430.950 +7.6PHG5830

I must check if the Kenwoods display it correctly, and then configure
digi_ned to automatically broadcast these maybe once every hour or so?
Would that be sufficient, or should we keep it to 15mins?

Another dumb question, (and I haven't googled yet), is there a tool in
existence that would allow the generation of a string for a 'compressed'
object that I could then paste into the digi_ned configuration file?

I have a Garmin gps Map/plotter 276C that receives NEMA input from the D700
thru the mini jack out (GPS). Is very cool. I can click on a plotted
callsign and my GPS will give me voice directions to the Callsign's
location.

Yea. Xastir. Create an object and then look in the
~/.xastir/config/object.log file to see what it looks like.
