Greetings to all who are reading along .
Our heat wave is still on in southern Missouri and the
weather guys are saying it will be even worse at the
beginning of next week. My neighbor keeps mentioning
the "dog days of August" as if he expects it to get
worse. There have been little thunderstorms all around
but none on our hill.
Peter, I'm glad Maria at least is enjoying the warmer
days.
Michael, like Peter, I was surprised to hear that you are
having to mow grass at this time of year in Auckland.
About the end of October the mowing stops here until around
March or April. We have a "country" yard--whatever grows,
grows. Of course in some areas of the town folks have
manicured lawns where sod has been planted and fertilizing
and watering goes on to keep the grass growing so it can
be mowed. It is a constant battle for them because the
ground here in the Ozarks is very rocky with very little
dirt on top. So people have to keep hauling in top soil
which quickly washes down the hills unless something is
put there to hold it. The flowers in your mother's front
garden sound nice.
Sara, we were so pleased that you connected to our BBS by
Telnet and found that it worked well for you. At one time
K.O. had a greeting on his BBS that read "Real Hams use
Radio." As nodes began to fall by the wayside and it became
more and more difficult to connect anywhere by radio, he had
to drop that line and find another way to make communication
accessible. He has provided a Telnet connection for a group
of people who, otherwise, would not be able to connect at all.
We know you have had a lot of trouble getting connected through
the BBS you have been using. We hope you will use the Telnet
connection so we can hear from you more often.
On Monday evenings at 7 P.M. CDT I conduct a directed
packet net on our BBS and have done so for several years.
We don't have a large group, sometimes only three of us,
but as many as seven. I connect by radio and Gary, KB0OFD,
who lives only about 12 radio miles from us, connects by
radio. The others connect by Telnet. Some of those are Roger,
KB0SON, in Austin, Minnesota; Daryl, AE5WX, in Little Rock,
Arkansas; Doug, KC0EQA, in Hastings, Nebraska; and Jerry,
KE0KI, in Nixa, Missouri.
Michael, Bill, KE5ZGI, in New Mexico joined the net Monday
night. K.O. has been working with Bill to help him find a
way out of New Mexico because he had not been having much
luck with xNOS BBS's. Michael sent a message to K.O. telling
him that Bill needed assistance. K.O. got in touch with Bill,
set him up on Telnet so he could use our BBS, and all seems to
be working well. Bill says he has been in packet only about
two months, but he is a quick learner and I hope will be around
for a while. So, maybe you will check in on the Monday night
net, also, Sara. Just connect to the BBS, type c ENTER when
you get the command line and you are in. Your callsign will
show on our screens when you enter the conference. Just stand
by and I will acknowledge you as soon as I can. You will be
given all the help you need until you see the pattern of how
we do it.
If any others of you would be interested in checking in on that
net, just let us know and K.O. will do what is necessary to get
you set up.
This bulletin is getting quite lengthy so it is time to stop for
now. I'll be watching for new bulletins.
73, Billie
