Thank you for your comments Mike.

I made the comment earlier that Yaesu should have made full power
obtainable on a lower than 12v input. I have subsequently noted that
someone has stated that the maximum power is obtainable with something
like 10.8v (Was it?) or so and that the excess voltage is "burned off"
(dropped) as heat.

I noted immediately when I ran it for the first time that the FT-817ND
gets VERY warm on the mains PSU and wondered if this was due to
inefficieny. Heat is waste. "Heat" should be R.F. energy exiting the
aerial.

It seems that this is due to Yaesu dropping the LT feed (As I had hoped!)
which is not so much inefficient, as useful. It now seems that my cigar
feed of 12v (Dropping to 10.7 or so on High Power) WILL be sufficient to
drive it to slightly less than 5W as it has 3 flashing bars with dropping
to 10.7v. Thank goodness.
