Andy,
Different strokes for different folks, methinks.....

The TS50 is a lot of radio in a small package - still my favourite
field-station radio. Great audio, I have used it with great success on
10M with my (ex) restricted ZU licence, quite a few QSL cards from the UK.

I suppose one must take into consideration that the TS50 is a mobile rig
and basic at best. The performance, however is tops. These radios
comfortably run @ 120Watts output( see mods.de ) without any hassle.
Personally the only beef I have with the TS50 is the lack of filtering.

The IC 706 2 G, also in my stable, is maybe too much radio, who uses all
the frequencies,? I don't !
The audio on the 706 is poor and very treble( but then again good for DX
), filtering improves substantially once you've fitted a narrow SSB filter
and providing you have DSP.
If you crank up the output on the 706, the cooling-fan goes on & off to
distraction.

I prefer ICOM because in South Africa because they provide the best value
for money and we have local agents who can repair when needed.
Nice radios, actually.
Bottom line..... all of the manufacturers make very nice radios and all of
them also have at some stage made a crappy model.

Stick with whatever works for you, or work best with what sticks with you
- happy DX !!

PS I have an IC-W32A, absolute nightmare without the manual !!
