There are in fact some differences:
The range of your WLAN is restricted to some 10 meters.
Your 2-m-equipment can easily reach far out dozends of kilometers.
And you aren't allowed to use one without a ham license.
Also only the ham license qualifies you to make changes on the equipment 
(which you cannot do on a WLAN-card anyway)...
 
The question has to be asked different: Are you a radio operator or a 
communications facility user? For the latter, you don't need a ham radio 
license...
