Here are 2 senario's

1.

I walk into HAM-Central.

I buy a "FT-2000" 2m FM radio.
I buy a "Super-tenna" 9dbi gain 2m vertical antenna.
I buy a "PakRack 1200 baud TNC"

I go home.

I unpack all my new goodies.

I set up the 2m box on the table, next to the TNC. I break out the
soldering iron and
make a Minidin to Din5 cable for the Radio to TNC link using the diagrams
supplied
by both the Radio and TNC manuals. Hook up the serial cable.

I go outside and fix the antenna to the top of the TV antenna mast and run
some coax
(RG213 with 2x PL259 plugs).

I turn on the computer and install "SuperPac" following the autoboot
questions on the
CD supplied with the TNC. This sets up my callsign, com port, home bbs
(if known),
places a shortcut on the desktop and runs the program.

I now play packet any learn what it all has to offer.

2.

I walk into LAN-central.

I buy an 802.11d 11Mbit/s Access Point.
I buy a 9dbi waveguide antenna

I go home.

I unpack my goodies.

I set up the Access Point (AP) ontop of the computer. Make a CAT5
Crossover Cable,
I plug in the cable into the computer.

I go outside and place the waveguide antenna on top of the TV antenna
mast. Run
come coax (LDF-450 with 2x N-connectors).

I place the CD that came with the AP and it auto installs it's management
software and
prompts me for defaults and suggests values.

I now play 802.11b and learn what it all has to offer.

==========================================================================

Now. Tell me what is the difference?

# I buy equipment

# I make a few cables.

# I run coax.

# I install software

# I play.

# both work within a Amateur Allocation.

# There is no guarrentee of success in either area.

Regards

Mark
