Using modern packet software (Winpack, Sally), you don't need to learn
much about anything, other than how to configure the software and how to
arrange a good link to an access point (the nearest BBS).

WiFI would be not that much different from a software point of view, but
would for many be a greater technical challenge to get a good connection
to an access point. We are talking here 2.4Ghz and as it comes (out of
the box) extremely short range. Compare that to 2m which easily achieves
30 miles straight out of the box.

There is certainly a massive technical challenge to be found in adapting
Wifi technology to work for us both from a software point of view and
the difficulties of the hardware adaption.
