Hi David

This is not strictly true and it is not as easy as you and Paula have stated.

I had a Tiny2 TNC...Old Model which does not support Kiss Mode.

So I had the Rig & the twig and a TNC and a very early version of WinPack
v5.53 to be precise.

What may I ask drove the TNC & WinPack with my Rig. Certainly NOT WinPack or
Paket v6.1 which I had as well. WinPack was given to as I was told it was much
easier to use..

Of course a very little file called Tiny2.txt. I had the manual but had never
been involved in Packet prior to 1996 although a RA since 1982.

There are some TNC Driver txt files in WinPack but the Tiny2 is for the newer
model not mine.

What on earth was "MON ON"...RETries, etc etc etc..

I had to study the manual really hard to make up a .txt file to run my TNC and
no doubt many other people on Packet Radio run into the same problem so it
definitely is not as easy as you and Paula state.

I them joined GB7SOL and the Sysop Ivor G6URP came to my home and checked my
.txt file and made a few adjustments and my .txt files have been the same ever
since.

I am not aware of any other Sysop doing what Ivor did for me so where did the
Packet People find their " Saviour "...No one else around me that I am aware
of are on Packet and the Local RA Club ceased to exist many years ago although
I did go to a few but never found them interesting due to an "Old Guard" who
did not like our CB Experience. No doubt if it had not been for Ivor G6URP I
may not be on Packet today.

On another Tack S/Coldfield has just become Broadband and although I do read
many magazines there is nothing better than seeing a Broadband installation
being used and gaining some experience from others so where do I go from here
is an interesting question. There is no one in this vicinity that uses
Broadband as it has just been connected within the past few days and in fact
the BT Sub Exchange is right behind my local but if I knock their door I
cannot expect much help relative to the questions that I want to ask which
could include Wi-Fi just to save more cables in my home..

No, setting up a Packet Radio system from "Cold" is not as easy as you and
Paula make it out to be. I am although quite happy with the 1200 RF connection
to my BBS GB7MAX ( which uses your password system) and also Telnet with
GB7FCR for receiving only so as not to mess up WP by sending from two BBS.

One thing about my Telnet system was that it does not include a TNC so even if
I had never had the experience of setting up a TNC for RF Packet it was much
much easier with WinPack and help from Trev the Sysop of GB7FCR as all I
needed was a BBS.TXT file. The modem was already working!!.

And YES I can handle a soldering iron of which there are two hanging in my
kitchen having constant use..and a volt meter that I used today..

As for 2.4GHz and WLAN I do not have a clue about this system as there is only
a certain amount I can do in a day and that is NOT spending hours on the
Internet and Packet Radio. Perhaps it has something to do with keeping alive
and cooking and cleaning and washing clothes and mowing three so called lawns
and painting and decorating and all the extra things that a wife does so that
man has more time to spend on hobbies...BUT I am not complaining on that
score..

Packet Radio is not that easy to a newcomer but as Computers number millions
and are part of the school system can you not wonder that we may be "Old Hat"
using 1200 baud when I have  P4 2.66 and P4 1.6 and on Telnet can download a
1,000 SB Headers in seconds and yet I like my 1200 RF BBS. Try and convince
the younger generation!!.

I see enough of the younger generation as there are two schools of over 4,000
pupils within 100m of my home and being just back to school the roads are
again littered with crisp packets, coffee cups, half eaten sandwiches, and
cigarette ends in their thousands with quite a few on my drive..

Since 1982 I have never been asked a single solitary question about the
Antenna's on my house as they are for all to see being a corner house, hence
three so called lawns.

Cheers
