I have been following the messages regarding using Wireless LAN
technology to replace packet radio.

I don't think moving to 2.4GHz will work because transceivers for those
frequencies are very innaccessable to most ham ops. It will make fewer,
not more peaople interested!

I understand that 1200bps is slow compared to modern telephone modems,
but it just has to be put up with because 2m will not support anything
faster except under very strong signal conditions, not something that a
lot of hams have.

2m gear is the most common stuff around and anything higher has reduced
range and is hard to obtain. Any less range would not suffice for the
many hams who live quite a distance from the BBS.

There is of course consumer WiFi stuff around cheaply but these have
limited range to around a few kms I think. No good for most hams who
live more than this distance from the BBS.

The decline in Packet activity is most likely caused by the Internet
taking over it's primary function, thus making it more a curiosity for
those who are interested rather than a useful medium.

We just can't compete with e-mail.
