I will grant you that many of the items can be bought off the shelf at
Dixons, but the techniques of putting them to our use can not be had off
the shelf. The off the shelf range is very restricted, of little or no
use to us as they stand. Many of us buy our radios, TNC's and antennas
of the shelf already. The only difference is that a licence is required
to use that equipment. Our licence is also required to make none type
approved use of the WiFi technology within our section of the 2.4Ghz
band.

What real difference is there between buying ex-PMR then converting that
for our use and buying WiFi then adapting that for our use?

What better way is there to develop new techniques, enabling higher
communication speed, than to experiment with what >WE< can do with this
equipment and the none RA's can't legally do. In most cases it seems to
be the radio amateurs that are in many towns developing the use of WIFI
for public Internet access over a wide area in both the UK and other
countries. The difference is that RA's are using the technology for our
purposes in many countries, but not the UK.

As regards software development, what better way to urge the writing and
production of new software, than amateurs having access to their own
11Mb network? Just think what we could do with this sort of bandwidth.

It opens up so many possibilities for new developments... Packet based
upon html (or something even more suited to our needs), voice and video
links, massive of amounts of data plus amateur software being quickly
and easily distributed.

Think Winpack V23 with html packet, voice over IP, a pop up window in
the corner of the Winpack screen with a voice and video link built in.

The world linked up via a 1200baud RF by amateurs 20 years ago was
nothinmg short of miraculous, today it is just old hat. We need to move
on using the very best of whatever modern technolgy has to offer us. We
can't turn a blind eye to it, just because we didn't invent it.
