Well Dave, line of sight is what ya need. I talked 23 miles on a 500 mw
FRS radio, but I was on a ridgetop too. And one recorded distance for the
same FRS band was 60+ miles! I know that is not the same band as wireless
lan's but shows that line of sight is needed for the distance. I just made
my first LAN contact yesterday useing the 'rubber duck' ant. that with my PCI
card. I was 100 ft from the access point and had low signal
with some noise so it was not a fast link. I have plans to make a small
yagi beam (not to big, maybe 3 or 4 elem.) and see how much increase I
get. Oh, and change that little connector on the card to something a bit
more common like an 'F' connector.
There is a commercial wireless LAN localy here (that I cant get) with
ridgetop access points and if ya sign on to there service, you will get an
outside ant., LAN card and setup but all for a price, big price too. So I
would think if you and youme high gain ant's and point
them right, a link could be made. I have also heard or amps to extend
range but I have not seen them.
Play, explore, try and try again! thats what hams do... I dont know much
about all this but I am starting to have some fun with it. Maybe some
others will jump in and tell us more....
