Hi Dave,
Have a look here:-
http://net-snmp.sourceforge.net/
http://www.simpleweb.org/
SNMP is simple network management protocol.
In your case it will be a means to viewing/altering parameters on your
802.11b Wavelan Access Point.
Normally the Access point will come with a SNMP utility specific to your
make of Access Point, You need to read the documantation that comes with
the Access Point. There will be a default administrator password for it
which you need to change. Using the snmp utility you can then configure
all the neccessary parameters such as CH number/Freq , preample, IP
address
netmask , default gateway etc etc.
You may also be able to alter the parameters from a web interface, I am
not
familiar with the unit which you have bought.
I have 3 (old now) Netgear ME102 access points, one of which I have
modified for an external antenna, most new AP's come with external
antenna sockets which could be RPSMA RPTNC MMX etc etc.
How are you measuring data throughput ?
Qcheck is a free utility which measures data throughput between
different computers/operating systems.
http://www.ixiacom.com/enterprise/Qcheck.php
You need to install it on the 2 computers that you want to check
throughput
between. If one is a linux box then there is an RPM for the endpoint only,
which allows you to run qcheck on the windows machine and test throughput
between the windows machine and the linux box.
http://www.ixiacom.com/enterprise/Chariot.php?section=10#endpoints
So basically Dave check the throughput between a computer attached to the
router and the computer connected to the access point.
This will tell you the data rate over the WLAN.
Don't expect a big value, it will be about 5Mbits/sec at the best.
WEP can also on certain makes of AP decrease the throughput.
But I would advise using it, unless you want us wardrivers to sniff
you out and hog your bandwidth ;-)
