Hello People,

For a few days now I have been feeling disenheartened.

I was only ever able to see either my own AP's signal on my PCMCIA WLAN
card or that of the fellow amateur 6.5km away. Knowing that there was a
wireless ISP in LOS of me 6k away I was perturbed to know why I could not
see there signal. There is software around, wlanexpert, that shows the
user a specrtal sweep of the 2.4 GHz band showing carriers independant of
being wlan, ie, cordless phones etc. I saw this in operation and was
amazed at the number of signals from just sitting in a shopping centre car
park!!!

I was told about a linux program called KISMET and promptly downloaded and
installed it, but alas, it did not work with my cards chipset. This
program also showed decoded data from "so-called" encrypted wlan systems,
even those "cloaked" (some how hidden from view????).

Really annoyed that mycard did not work with this software I was
determined to find a simple way to "see" any other data traffic.

Back to roots, I tried linux's 'tcpdump' program that simply dumps link
level data to standard output, in my case the console screen, bingo!!
there it was, heaps and heaps of traffic flowing abait only MAC addresses
but proof that from my location with a directive antenna I can 'see' data
6km away with no problem.

This also proves, to me, that with modest equipment there is much that can
be done in forming high speed links over many km's.

Regrads

Mark
