This is correct.  My card, an Enterasys Roamabout, has a Signal and Noise
bargraph display which gives a reading in dbm.

Also,  Netstumbler has a bargraph display.

Wlanexpert, which I have seen working, but not on my laptop, has a
spectral sweep display and a vswr meter, this requires a specfic card
chipset, prism I think????

There are many others, areasol, airsnort, kismet (for linux), ntop just to
name a few.
