Hi Bill and readers,
Pardon my change of subject since this has nothing to do with Iraq.
Well, you can chalk it up to the fact I live in New Jersey, but no matter
where I'm from I'm fed up with all this US (and some other) bashing that
goes around periodically. Actually, it can all be attributed to ignorance
and short-sightedness.
While you mention WW2, we after all weren't the only Allies. Please don't
single out the Americans, we may have provided the largest fighting force
but we weren't the ONY one. Here's where lumping them together is
appropriate, consider them ALL right down to the unsung heroes, the
civillian resistance fighters all over the world, even in places you'd
never guess. So much for war, there is MORE to consider!
Now the KEY point that REALLY irks me is people thinking that a
government actually represents the Nation and it's people! OPEN YOUR EYES
and see the simple fact of life, not only does it NOT but the average
person, American or other would much rather just be left in peace and get
along with others in a normal manner when all is said and done. Now don't
go calling me a "Peacenik" when I'm not, but I'm not a "War Hawk" by a
long shot either. Ther ARE times when war is the only solution but such
is RARE indeed!
Please understand in light of the above that there are TWO completely
separate entities to be considered, the Nation and the government
thereof. The people have NO SAY in the actions of the government and it
in no way represents our feelings in such matters as those under
discussion. Please consider this in any future bashing, I for one don't
like the notion that I should wear Bush's black eye, or Blair's, or
Howard's for that matter.
One major point that is SO overlooked is Americas humanitarian aid all
over the world! This is NOT provided by the government but by CITIZEN
VOLUNTEERS! If not for our emergency response and aid half of Austraia
would have gone up in flames, they would still be digging bodies out of
the rubble in South American countries and Turkey. There are so many
examples of how people of many nations help each other in times of need
the list is endless!
Now wouldn't it be a good thing to focus on the GOOD things Americans and
others do rather than harping on the bad? This seems to be the history of
the world as taught in school too, we learn about our "progress" by
looking at the mileposts of war along the road! This is likely the way it
starts we learn about this and that battle rather than learning about
PEOPLE and culture which is the REAL progress toward PEACE. When we know
more about each other it's easier to settle our differences, right?
Governments will conduct business as usual but meanwhile WE should look
at each other rather than focusing on what they do in our name. SEPARATE
the two in your mind because they are separate in fact. Now wouldn't it
be nice if the people told the government "To hell with you, I'm not
taking up arms against my friend!" ? Ah, Utopia.........
