Well Clyde, my father was a soap maker years ago and 'caustic soda' is the
other main ingrediant to go with the tallow or fat. What proporions to
what I cannot remember but you start with the tallow boiling and gradually
add the caustic soda makeing sure it doesn't suddenly go hard on you. Also
a small quantity of resin was added afterwards.
We used to make it in huge Vats and had to be careful as if it ever went
hard on you no way could you soften it again and it had to be dug out
physicallly. We used steam to boil the tallow. I took a few days to make a
batch so not sure how long useing just a small quantity which you are
obviously going to do.
