The VHF/UHF openings into South Australia and Victoria ended when the
trough along the west coast moved east bringing thunderstorms to my area.
This was the best opening I have noted in several years.

I had 36 contacts in about 30 hours on 144 and 432mHz ranging from 2670 km
to 3480 km in distance. Not bad for those frequencies. The Great
Australian Bight develops marvellous ducting when weather conditions are
right. The longest period of DX coming across the Bight was about 20 years
ago when there was an opening that lasted for nearly two weeks. These
openings are nearly all tropospheric although an occasional sporadic E
opening goes as high as 144 mHz at least.

There have been a couple of very short opening, sporadic E into the
eastern states but nothing lasting more than a few minutes with no
contacts taking place.
Chees,
Bob VK6BE.
