Hi Sten and others.

Many thanks for all the replies, I hadn't thought of actually compiling
and circulating a list, but I will do so in the near future.

It was very interesting to read the comments on the "dumbing down" of ham
skills by the issuing of the newer less technical requirements licences.

The "foundation licencees", the entry level licence in VK now make up the
predominant section of our club and whilst you do hear the expounding of
some very strange technical ideas both on air and in the club rooms, our
club has always tried to help and explain rather than, as we all have felt
like doing at times, shake our heads in horror and walk away.

One of the problems we face is that our club is located about 50km from
any area of technical support in the form of company reps and outlets.
This makes it very hard to get the equipment manufacturers out to our
meetings.

Some of the items we have previously had in the way of club nights have
been talks by

people whom have installed the Melbourne commercial Television
transmission sites,

Antarctic explorers (very little radio content),
antenna building nights where each member of the audience ended up with a
2m antenna he had built and tested on the night,

a talk on building super regen receivers by a ham who had had a qso of
1200km on 6m using one,

A club movie night,

ATV (by myself the most unsuccessfull ATVer ever, due to a mountain chain
between me and the nearest ATV repeater).

One thought that springs to mind is the idea of a "build it yourself"
night using club supplied kits. This could be anything not necessarily a
radio device. Considering the number of entry level hams we now have in
the club almost anything would be good. Any suggestions would be welcome
for a design that would be a good attention grabber.

One thing that we will be doing in the near future is a "how to solder
electronic equipment" night. The problem with that is of course getting
sufficient equipment together to have a more practical than theory night.

                               Regards Tony VK3API
