There have been a lot of studies done on how to get from where we are now
with majority coal fired stations to a system that does not use fossil
fuels.
The concensus seems to be that we could do it if we had 20 to 40 years
make the change.
However politics seems to have got into the act and it seems that if
things keep going the way they are we will have widespread blackouts in
the UK in the next year or two.
In Australia we will have that problem in about three to four years.

Depending on what is done with our Emissions Trading laws at present in
parliament we could end up with blackouts immeadiatly the proposed laws
come into effect.

However presuming that such nonsense is not allowed to happen, assuming
politicians act sensibly, there is no way that replacement of coal and
gas fired electricity can be replaced with solar or wind.
The use of storage by use of salts is very difficult when scaled up to
the present power requirements.
The CO2 reduction targets in Europe are not possible without blackouts.
The proposed nuclear power stations in the UK will not be on line for up
to 10 years, and in Australia they may never appear.
All this might change the day after the first blackouts.
