This was covered as part of a talk I gave at my local club. Harry M1BYT
has a copy of my presentation which I believe was used as part of the
training course that he is involved with.

Anyway, the TRACE vs WIDE is a can of worms. It's only a good as those who
support it. The WIDEn-n digipath is almost useless as it provides no way
of tracing back the path that beacons have taken to get to their
destination.

This is where TRACE comes in. When a TRACE digipeater receives a beacon
with an unproto address that includes TRACEn-n (eg: TRACE7-7), it removes
a number and adds it's DIGI ALIAS to the beacon:

M0PZT > APRS,RELAY,TRACE7-7

M5WJF hears me and digi's me thus:

M0PZT > APRS,RELAY,M5WJF,TRACE7-6

And so the TRACE counts down until it expires.

Not good. If you wish to spread amongst the network, you'll need to be a
bit more generous with your Unproto Address:

M0PZT-9 > APRS,RELAY,TRACE3-3 for example.

Your example above would only ensure (if within range) of 2 digis.

The only way to get yourself seen is to use a digipath that is supported
by your local digipeaters. Using TRACEn-n is also good as it enables you
to watch how the band is working - if a station you usually see takes 6
hops to get to you, but today is only taking 2, either there is a
high-power digipeater lurking or the 2m band is open...

If all that has got you a bit dizzy, have a browse to my webpage where you
can see a bit more about this:-
