I'd agree that if 23cm is the only thing going for it, thet the VX-7R could
keep you happy for the forseeable future. My VX has been "de-flowered" as
I couldn't stand the in-built TX audio (the RX wasn't great, either) so
suffice to say that it's no longer on my belt when I go for a swim but it
now sounds as good as I think it ought to.
VX-7 Commander lets you program the memories/settings along with the
software/freeband mods should you so desire. The AM RX on it is actually
quite usable, even with the rubber-duck.
The leather case is a must if you regularly take it out /M, and the swivel
belt adaptor is fair better than those sprung-loaded ones.
As for silver vs black - I'm with Henry Ford.

To be honest, I was more impressed with the actual radio than the digital
side of it - It "felt" like a Yaesu handy, although this was the first
modern Icom handheld I'd actually ever used (I'm used to my trusty IC2e)!
The D-STAR is a "nice to have" but not at the current price and I certainly
wouldn't be swapping the Icom for the VX anytime soon ;)
