I thought this one needed a brief explanation for Warren and any others
who might not have heard of it.
I'm amazed he hasn't. All current spacecraft have ablative shields and
always have. They are what stops a craft burning up on re entry, like the
American shuttle.
The Americans use(d) a kind of ceramic tile. Carefully designed.
Those backward Russians just used cork and never had any problems.
Perhaps, when the shuttles fly again, they might decide to try cork or, at
least do regular inspections. It's is a tragedy that seven people had to
die.
