Hi Ian and Trekkies,
Nice to know that Earth took over the universe, after all, Starfleet HQ
is in San Fransisco CA USA which should tell you who took over Earth
first. Borg interference not withstanding Bush finally got his way. (;->)
Then there is Fururama which thankfully doesn't employ endless
technobabble unless you consider Bender's shiny metal (bottom plate) a
scientific reference.
Back to ST(NG) I begin to wonder about the conversion factor from parsecs
to kellicams. Hmmm, could be a reference to a specialized sort of
portable camera, the Kelly Cam. I wonder when the Foley will come in to
play, after all it's the sound effect board.
Then there is the military slang still in use in many "shoot anything
that moves" flicks like Starship Troopers, the strange sounding unit of
distance, the click. Then again, in the movie the bugs made the clicks...
Ah, the wonderful world of sci-fi technobabble, if you can't dazzle them
with brilliance, baffle them with Klingon Targ stuff. Remember folks, it
IS rocket science.
'Scuse me while I take a break, The Forbidden Planet is on TV, perhaps
the longest running set of movie props ever made. Made in 1956 give or
take a few months they survived and appeared in numerous movies and TV
shows up until the late 80s or early 90s. Robby the robot must be the
most famous of all, showed up in Lost In Space and The Twilight Zone. The
space ship showed up just about everywhere as a "flying saucer" may,
several Twilight Zone episodes featured it as both the small scale model
and the full sized prop. Then there is the cast but that gets even more
involved. Let's just say that Leslie Nielsen was the captain and went
from an adventure on Altair 4 to Airplane in which he played opposite
William Shatner (who also lost his command, hi) and failing that ended up
in Police Academy.
Einstein was right, everything is relative, especially in entertainment.
Careful of that little pink blob on the seat, may not be bubblegum. If
you hear a small voice, beware. It just may be The Blob, the original
organic Borg. The unspoken line Steve McQueen was thinking was "I am the
Blob. Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated." (;->)
