Hi all experimenters,
Ben Franklin, a man after my own adventurous heart, and Gilbert who supplied
me with a chemestry set that evolved into an explosives laboratory. Mum
didn't like the stink bombs very much. Combined with Franklin and of course
Tesla there were loud explosions and clouds of smoke by day, electric arcs
and flashing lights by night, Frankenstein Laboratories was born much to the
dismay of the neighbors.
Franklin and the Leyden jar, interestingly it delivered shocks. This led to
an interesting prank at tech school, charged capacitors on the shelf, BEWARE.
The instructor began the class with a suggestion; get your kicks from sex,
not electricity. Good grief man, we're young men with a high charge, we get
our kicks with both! Backing up a few pages to grade school, I was already
into electronics and brought a high ratio audio output transformer used in
radios, the transistor radio was a few years in coming, to school along with
a flashlight battery. Out in the playground during recess the kids gathered
in a circle holding hands, the one at each end held a wire from the
transformer. When I touched the speaker wires to the battery they all got a
shock, instead of clobbering me they all clamored for more. OK, this went on
until a teacher noticed, being a killjoy she took the transformer and battery
away. No big deal, I had plenty more at home, but they didn't come to school
only to be taken away.
Franklin and his kite experiment, "The next two who tried this extremely
dangerous experiment were killed." This I didn't know at the time, but when I
read about Franklin I found out the truth, he was as chicken as I was, he got
an assistant to hold the string. We had a lot in common, one of them was our
mums didn't raise any stupid children.
As time went by (Play it again Sam) one thing led to another and here I am as
KB2VXA with so many electrons coursing through my veins as a result of a
series of electric shocks I qualify as a cation. One advantage is lightning
is afraid of me. Call me lucky if you will, I've survived them all including
my antenna taking a hit while I was wearing headphones with my hand on a
metal mic. I call it good earthing, but I wouldn't want to test that theory.
