Hi Bob and all,
I'm sure we've all noticed by now those CFLs offer no real savings to the
consumer, replacement cost outstrips any reduction in the electricity
bill. The "usual gang of idiots" in Canberra seem to have only one
interest, reduction of power demand while overlooking what it costs the
user. Then there are environmental concerns but that's nothing new by a
long shot, Tesla invented the things so it goes back THAT far. The only
difference is in the ammount of hazardous substances (rare earth oxides
and mercury) released into the environment has increased over that when
standard flourescents and HID lamps were the only related source. Now
what's all the hubub over calling in a hazmat team should you break a CFL
when no such considerations were given to cleaning up the debris of the
older lamps which contain far more mercury? I get a huge laugh at the EPA
recommendations considering how you can recover enough mercury from an
HID lamp to make a puddle on the table and play with it. Remember science
class in school where they had several pounds of it and did just that to
demonstrate it's metallic liquid properties and the students held it with
bare hands? OMG! WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!
Before the greenies all freak out metallic mercury cannot be absorbed by
the body, you can swallow it and it will only give you pretty sparkling
poo. It's the salts that are extremely toxic, just ask The Mad Hatter.
As for your floodlights and motion sensors the answer is no, solid state
controls and flourescent lamps never were compatible, that's why you
can't use them on dimmer circuits. The landlord has the house fully
equipped with CFLs simply because they need not be replaced as often as
incandesents with two exceptions, the motion controlled porch lights and
the solar controlled dusk to dawn flood lamps for yard illumination.
Yeah, just toss them in the rubbish bin unless you have the neighborhood
Trash Police to contend with, some people are nosey troublemakers. If you
have any foolish enough to a sack of some vile and highly odorous offal
just to satisfy their morbid curiosity all the better for a great laugh.
Instead of the usual frog I can send a few dead squid if you happen to
need them for anything.
