Hi Andy and all,
My my, reflecting back on OBOE you're so far off the beam you're bombing
France! (Well, maybe that's a good idea...) Methinks you need a refresher
course in audio amplification for one thing but I won't pick it all
apart, just say your bull was one big pile. Never mind Bob Orban's
engineering feats, he makes some of the best processors in the world but
unless you have a flat audio chain it all goes for naught. If you could
hear the gang on 3885 you'd think you were listening to broadcast
stations. BTW, unless you rip the guts out of that 706 and put it all
back the "right" way no matter what you put into the mic jack it'll come
out sounding like a telephone. The audio chain is tailored for SSB and
it's AM sounds quite the same, it's not designed for broadcast audio
quality but rather for the 3KHz SSB 6KHz AM bandwidth and has no bass
response whatsoever.
Give me an old Johnson Viking and I'll rip it's guts out and when I'm
done you'll not tell it from a Harris 3DX50 Destiny. Oh, toss me an AM
Optimod while you're at it, the FM units don't sound good on AM and the
75uS preemph only helps a mite. Oh heck, toss in an RCA BTA-1R and I;ll
see you on Top Band. (I already have the Collins R-390.)
No toung in my cheek this time OM, go back and crack the books and you'll
see what a clean signal without those nasty phase distortion and IMD
products sounds like, we don't call AM angel music for nothing.
