Just my two cents worth on the subject ...

I agree with Frank ZS6MTV about the situation here in South Africa ... It is
a pity that things are this way ...

Before I retired three years ago I worked for what one could term, one of the
'opposition' telecommunications firms - also 'state-owned' I guess ... About
three years before retiring (thats six years back from now), I was heavily
involved in testing, training and acceptance-testing the infrastructure which
was to become the 'SNO' - Second Network Operator network ... We had
everything in place country-wide and ready to 'switch on' but were not
allowed to pass any traffic over the network until we WERE the SNO .. That
decision was left to the Minister of Telcommunication who deliberated on this
for some time .. I heard just a few weeks ago that my ex-firm had just been
granted a SNO licence ... More than six years later !!! .. The 'new' network
was already dated and not a cent was already dated and not a cent earned !!

I understand that my ex-firm sold it's SNO assets for a song - so basically
is my ex-firm still in the SNO business ? - I don't know anymore .. But the
equipment cost the firm millions of dollars in equipment and training and
none of it earned any revenue .. There were a few other companies in the SNO,
one of them that I know of also sold their SNO assets ...

Just the other day I read that Telkom has reduced our ADSL costs by 20% --
not much really when you consider its just the ADSL side of things ... Telkom
charges us for the line rental, the ADSL costs and also ISP costs ... In
total, a 512 kb/s ADSL costs in the region of 100 USA Dollars per month ..
And thats after the 20% reduction !! ... Telephone calls cost extra <grin>
...

I also just read that Telkom will be letting their 1024 kb/s customers play
with 4096 kb/s at no extra cost for a trail test period ... Last month
Telkom removed their 198 kb/s offerings and thTelkom removed their 198 kb/s offerings and their lowest ADSL speed Telkom is
384 kb/s ... Not really BroadBand is it !!!!

The 4096 kb/s tests at least show that Telkom may be taking the term
"BroadBand" seriously at last .... Throughput is another issue all together
<sigh> ...
