Have never done this myself , but in my opnion any piece of metal can
serve as an antenna (even a bed spring) .Provided your copper gutter is
reasonably insulated by wood or plastic and its drain pipe is of an
insulating material (or at least a short piece of it) such that the gutter
is not grounded ,you could try using the gutter as (part of)a long wire
antenna ,using an appropriate AMU =antenna matching unit.
This might work when it's NOT raining.
If the gutter is extended all around the house (being a loop) you could
replace a say 100mm length of this loop by plastic and connect a balanced
feeder to the copper on both sides of the insulating piece of gutter.
The balanced feeder can be twin lead electrical wire or of course it is
better to use a 450 or 300 Ohm feeder . Your AMU must then be suitable for
a balanced feeder . The circumference of the 'loop' should be equal to or
greater than the largest wave length you operate on.
It is obvious that the gutter should be dry otherwise the insulating bit
of the gutter would not be insulating.
However using the gutter as an antenna might cause problems inside the
house eg telephone ,HiFi interference or TVI .
Also using the gutter as a receiving antenna might cause interference to
reception due to electrical devices used inside the house (thermostats
etc)
Good Luck with your experiments ................please let us all know
whether you are successful or not.

to be RENEWABLE ENERGY and LINUX.
