Hmm..Yes, I see your point,Patrick. Convection could be a problem without
the modern materials used in modern gas discharge bulbs.

It is a matter of record that Joseph Swann did experiment with inert
gasses at low partial pressures while Edison stayed with a pure vacuum.

When Edison claimed to be the inventor of the electric light, which many
Americans still think he is, Swann heard about it and the result was a
court case. Out of this came the firm of Ediswan - Mazda, which also made
radio valves. i don't know if you are old enough to have seen Ediswan
Mazda valves but I remember them.
