Indeed electronic sensors and electronic control systems have become more
reliable over the years due to more advanced designs ,components and
manufacturing technology. However that in itself might not be sufficient
to achieve a minimal 'acceptable' risk.
That's why certain sensors and control systems in critical applications
are multi-plicated and used in a 'voting system'. Examples are systems in
'fly by wire' aircraft like the Airbus aircrafts , Nuclear Power Stations
and facilities in the Oil-Gas and Petro-chemical industries.
A voting system usually comprises multiple sensors and control systems
,operating in such a way that 'executive action' only takes place when 2
out of 'x' systems detect the (un)wanted condition.
In industries involving the production/processing of hydrocarbons a 2 out
of 3 system is often used.
It means that sensors and control systems are triplicated and that
executive action only takes places when 2 out of the 3 systems detect the
(un)wanted condition.

Also in 2005 they say the future is bright ; 2 of its challenges remaining
to be RENEWABLE ENERGY and LINUX.
