It is quite correct that electric motors do not need the same sort of power
levels that internal combustion motors need.
Electric series wound motors used for traction purposes have altogether
different performance characteristics.
So much so that they have maximium torque at standstill !
A petrol engine has zero torque at standstill.
Thats why trams and trains do not have overhead wiring the diameter of
telegraph poles, even taking into account the voltage. Trams are usually 600
volt and trains, at least here from 1500 volt and up.
