A friend of mine who was very much involved with the nuclear power industry
and nuclear weapons from the early days and was involved in the deign of a
nuclear power station for Australia told me this story.
He was at a conference in Vienna at the International Nuclear Organisation.
The Russians gave a presentation on their then new nuclear reactor of the type
that was installed at Chenobyl.
In the discussion that followed it was pointed out to the Russians that they
had built in a very risky design problem. It was to do with the
graphite moderators.
He received the report on the failure.
It was the very same fault that caused the failure at Chenobyl.
