Back in the 1980s, I accidentally tuned in to some people around 6.640 MHz
LSB.

They were discussing aerials, especially in tower blocks, two of them would
only say they were "in London."

One had a predictable solution, he had a mobile CB whip on a tray on
runners, which he could slide out when he wanted to transmit, then close
the window.

Another was very ingenious. He had a fishing reel just outside his window.
Instead of fishing line, he had wire. He didn't say what sort. On the end
of the wire was a plumb bob. He would lower this when he wanted to TX.

He did say he was nearly at the top of the tower block so he would
probably be able to lower it to a full wavelength if he wanted.

There was no way I could talk back to them as I had accidentally picked
them up on a receiver I had modified from a PB RX, with a small transistor
radio with short wave to inject a carrier from it's L.O. for SSB.

Most of them had saved up to buy ham rigs so, if they were "Busted by
Busby" it was a tragedy. One or two had discovered that, as 6.640 MHz is
close to -
a subharmanic of 27MHz, they could just change the ref Osc Xtal according
to Xn=(f2 - f1)/3 - Xc. Strangely, some crystal suppliers had the right
one for the job on the shelf;-|.

I was assured by someone who had done it, that little or no retuning was
required and you could carry on using your 'Silver Rod'.

I don't know if the 'Pirates' are still around. I suppose people with HF
rigs might be able to get there. It is only just below 40m after all.

Part of my reason for putting that double delta in my loft was a need to
be devious so I listened to the description of those devious AEs with
great interest.

So, If you live high on a tower block and want to use 40m, get a fishing
reel. He never did say how he overcame the risk of the plumb bob smashing
windows several floors down BTW.
