As usual, John,G8MNY has sent out a bulletin with excellent graphics,
showing how this Voltmeter Screwdriver works.
I had thought it was something completely different. About 10 years ago, I
bought for UKP 6.00, $US 10, a tester which did a lot of things.
It acted as a normal neon tester at mains and low voltages. It could be
used to check Ni Cads to see whether they were healthy (the best use I
found for it). It could be used to trace live wires inside a wall and also
check for radiation from leaky microwave ovens.
I found one use which wasn't advertised. As it could check the radiation
from an AE feeder, it was useful for checking SWR without a meter in line.
It was well made exept for one thing. The one I had had a weak pocket clip
and it broke so, of course, I lost it.
The shop wasn't selling anymore and I haven't seen one since.
It also had a neon bulb, a resistor and a small watch type cell. For
certain, low voltage tests, it had a plug in lead with a crocodile clip.
I found it extremely useful and I wasn't afraid to use it, even on our 240
v mains. Should I ever see another. I will buy one.
The Rolston voltmeter screwdriver sounds very useful. I used neon testers
in my job for many years and the only time I ever got a shock was when I
was stupid enough to 'test' the boost rail on a TV set.
They are not made for 500v. It says so on the handle:-)
Thank you again, John, another one to print out and put in my book.
