Cold filament inrush current causing voltage to drop to almost nothing was
what caused the engine to stop. No volts = no sparks :-)
Sadly the safety notice printed in every car owners manual I've seen for
alternator equipped cars had no effect. "Do not disconnect the battery with
the engine running or serious damage may occur to the charging system."

LUCAS 16ACR 34A current at 6000rpm
That's 6000rpm of the alternator not engine. Expect 2 to 3 times less revs
on the engine due to the pulleys.
More than enough to power a car of the period which would have as standard
2x 55/60W headlamps (dip/beam) 2x 5W parking lamps, 2x 5W rear lamps,
2x 20W brakelamps, 4x 20W indicator lamps, 10W dash illumination, 5W
interior light, 80W? fan. 5W number plate lamp.
Upmarket cars such as my old Rover SD1 3500 which had many electric toys
for the late 70s had an 18ACR 43A unit. Such a smaller sized unit is
typically fitted to small hatchbacks nowadays as the current consumption of
cars has gone through the roof due to the proliferation of engine
managements systems, electric windows, fuel injection etc .
Nowadays my XYL's base Punto 1.2 has a 70A alternator (I incorrectly gave
this as 45A earlier). Though this does have electric power steering, the
unassisted steering cars have a smaller unit.
