That alternator probably was good for 50 or 60 amps. Cold head lamps that  run 
on  20  amps when hot would take about 320 amps initially and  shut  down  the 
alternator  by  killing the field excitation. That lamp inrush  current  would 
have been supplied by the battery had it been connected.
