Sorry Bob, my mistake. I did not mention it, but I was referring
to mainlines, eg a 280.000 Volts line. In Holland all socalled
"house connections" are buried. We have no 240 Volts lines
above ground level anymore. 

Around 15 years ago I had regular talks with power producers
overhere because they ordered equipment for the lines. Our company
delivered all the equipment, exept for the towers. Because of this I
once asked if it would be possible to bury them. They told me 
the cables had to be cooled. The steelcables would get hot because
of the energy that goes trough them. It would be possible, but
electricity would become too expensive. (P=I2 X R)

There is quite some research going on in Europe with local 
production of electricity by means of fuel cells. In this way
one avoids the loss of energy in the lines. (resistance) 
Also one does not need the mainlines who are a "visual impact".
I am sure the power producers don't like this, but  t h e y  also 
could start with it and make it there business.
