Hello Jeff, G4XNH and others.

There have been statistic studies about the subject in the USA and
Europe. No indication something is the matter. However a swedish
study concluded: a slighty higher risk living underneath them.
I once lived close to a powerline. There are some disadvantages...
During specific weather ice lumps fall down from the steel cables
and towers. If it storms I often could not sleep because the lines
as well as the towers howl. When it rains or during fog the insulators
in the towers make noise. People don't like to live their so
property close them has a lower value. Hams can forget having their shack
close to the lines because of the S9+ qrm. Sometimes a kid threw
piece of wire on the steel cables. There is a very small
difference in voltage between the two cables overhere, which then
caused heavy qrm for miles (sparks) if the piece of wire lays on
both of the wires. The utility company had to pay for damage (ice)
caused by their lines.

To make a line underground would be too expensive. They would have
to cool the cables. The house connections can be made underground.
In the USA and France you still see these wooden masts along
the roads. This is probably cheaper. Perhaps one day local
fuel cells driven generators will take care of the job.

The radio qrm of the lines is wide spectrum, so on all our bands one
can expect qrm. Go with a small radio underneath the lines
and listen what happens.

Electricity is so important today that we cannot live without it.
But some people cannot live without BAT or Reynolds Tob. either...

Most severe diseases are related to smoking, heavy drinking and
chemicals that do not belong in our body. Especially smoking
develops all kind of diseases. Burning tobacco would emit
more than 4000 different chemicals and complicated chemical
combinations. Some years ago I saw a test with naked laboratory mice.
They smeared cigarette tar on them. They all died.
