Hello Ian, dear readers.

It's not only for flight, that there are many who could claim the fame of
being the invetor but just one got it all...

Look at other invetories, like the steam engine. Everyone thinks that it was
James Watt who invented it. But this is not true. Steam engines have been
invented about 100 years before. James Watt only made a much better (both
more reliable and economic) version of that, which brought him fame.
The same for steam locomotion, which is not a Stephenson's invention.
but the Rocket was the first that really was durable and efficient.
Also cars with combustion engines have been assembled before Benz first car,
yet it is his machine which made it to the museums and history books, not the
earlier ones.

So it is with flight, too. The wrights didn't invent planes, and for sure not
gliders. But they were the first which actually got a motor glider working by
the same priciples that are still used on todays aircrafts. Others tried to
twist wings instead of using a set of rudders. And that's what the Wright
brothers are famous for (even if their first plane actually wasn't able to do
more than a hop because it was aeronautical instable).

And to come back to Edison, it's the same story again: He didn't invent the
light bulb, but it was his light bulb that lasted longer than all others and
could be used without having to chang them almost daily. So he got the fame
for making it usable.

73, Patrick
