Hi Ian and readers,
Oh, don't mind Andy GM7HUD, he's as mixed up as a March Hare, has his
input and output frequencies all confused. That's what happens when you
assume, you make an ass of u in front of me.
A line operated inverter ballast doesn't give a hoot what the AC input
fequency is, could even be DC for that matter as long as the polarity
will pass the rectifier bridge. YUP! The AC line is rectified and
filtered in order to operate the HF oscillator which powers the lamp at a
frequency between 100 and 200Khz.
Too bad he wasn't around when I used to QC/QA test them, I could have sat
him next to me and showed him the insides and the schematics. Then I
would have tied his hands behind his back, you can get one heck of an RF
burn off one of those hefty 40W drivers. (;->)
I wonder whatever gave him the idea that they use switching inverters or
the output is 50 or 60 cycles? If that were the case you would have to
ballast the ballast with another ballast to get the ballast to work,
right? (;->) I mean, like what purpose would the first one serve if you
supplied the lamp with AC line from an inverter when you STILL have to
use a ballast?
Ugh, like why not simplify the whole mess and feed the lamp with high
voltage HF current just like Tesla did regardless of how that current is
derived? Well, that's exactly how it's done, an inverter ballast is a
modern sort of miniature Tesla coil. That's right folks TESLA invented
the flourescent lamp, what do you think he's holding in his hand in that
classic portrait photo? Hmmm, don't confuse him with Edison who posed
with his incandescent lamp, but you just may want to put those photos
side by side for comparison, they're strikingly similar. (;->)
