A simple electronic ignition system using the existing coil and
mechanical advance system is fairly trivial project and could be bought
cheaply, however.....

A full blown completely electronic ignition system is not. It requires a
crank shaft trigger and at the very least a vacuum input transducer. You
then need a microprocessor able to look up in an EPROM the correct
instant to fire the mixture based upon engine speed, vacuum level and
anticipted rotational position of the crank. The data for the look-up
table EPROM is the really tricky part.
