Hello all Motorcyclists.

Wim, PE0WDM, has asked for information about a 'motorcycle ignition system'.
I understand that he wants to replace his worn mechanical ignition with an
electronic ignition system, including an automatic spark advance.

I have been looking at copies of 'Silicon Chip' (do you see this in Europe)
as I had an idea an ignition system for motorcycles had been printed.
So far, no luck as some of my magazines have been misplaced. I'm still
looking! I have found articles involving reluctor and photoelectric timing
systems for motor cars, using a distributor, and electronic switching of
a standard ignition coil. These do not include automatic advance, which is
usually achieved by a vacuum supplied from the carburetter manifold.

But I suspect that Wim wants electronic ignition with only the timing taken
from the engine crankshaft. This is the modern way, and most, if not all,
cars and 'bikes' would use this. But then, it would be a sealed, and very
expensive unit made by or for each car or bike company. Not easily examined,
nor would it be easily made by an amateur. The electronics would be the
patented property of the manufacturer.

I wonder, Wim, could you use a magnetic or photoelectric pickup to get timing
pulses, and your existing ignition coil with an electronic switch. Maybe you
could take a vacuum line from your fuel intake manifold which would operate a
potentiometer in the electronic switch. The MC3334 by Motorola is used in a
Delco distributor, and provides a 'dwell' input that could possibly be used.

I will look further, and maybe some other suggestions will be posted on this
subject. There should be many interested motor-mechanics on packet to keep
this theme going for a week or two. It may even take the attention of the
CBers who have monopolised our packet system with controversial comments.

Let's have further details, Wim, and as a motorcyclist until my ears failed,
and rendered me both deaf and unable to keep my balance (essential on a motor
bike!), I will be interested in your project.

73. Dick. VK3ABK.
