Hello Rudolph,
The "near field receivers" you are thinking of made by Star Tech and
others are frequency counters, not scanning receivers, scanning speed
doesn't even come into the picture. The addition of a broad band receiver
which only demodulates the strongest signal it hears (similar to the well
known crystal set) is easy enough. Another addition, frequency counting
of DTMF and CTCSS tones is a sub function of the very same frequency
counter that detected the carrier in the first place using a prescaler.
The only difference between one of those hand held units (basically)
and the well known Ham shack frequency counter/prescaler is size and
portability. Take one of those, attatch a short bit of wire for an
antenna and key your transmitter. Your carrier frequency will be read out
and resolved according to the prescaler setting in a fraction of a second.
Ok, if your counter is sensitive enough you just might read out the
frequency of your neighbors portable phone or garage door opener.
