Subject: nos and a palmtop

Several people replied to my previous query with suggestions as well as
asking for updates on how it worked for me so here's where I'm at:

I wanted a small system to take backpacking so I tried the obvious solution
of using the ax25 packet driver for the baycom in combination with nos
and an HP200LX palmtop.

I found several versions of the ax25 packet driver, all of which had the
same results for me.

What I found was that the ax25 driver seemed to work just fine before I start
nos. That is, using the pktstat program showed incoming packets coming
in and being dropped.

After starting nos, I found that only the smallest of packets would be
sucessfully received. Longer packets would on occasion sneak thru but for
the most part would be rejected.

I tried using the baypac program and was able to reliably transmit several
hundred byte packets.

My conclusion is that nos is locking interrupts for too long of a period
for the interrupt driven ax25 packet driver to accomodate. The palmtop
has a 80186 processor with I think something around 7.8MHz so it is
definately on the wimpy side.

How much ram does that computer have?

The other problem I found was that the software dcd in both ax25 and
baypac programs would never allow transmitting. I presume that this is
because the noise is creating a signal which looks somewhat valid.

At this point it looks to me like I'll be unable to get a tcp/ip station
using the 200LX to work but will be stuck with baycom and raw ax25.

As you know Glenn the baycom modum uses a lot of ram in the computer and on
top of that
you have the ax25 patch to nos. I would try making a smaller version of NOS. A
month ago
I was compiling NOS for a friend and then decided to make a NET compile. I
turned off
just about everything and it compiled. It was wimpy but it takes very little
ram. It
looks like maybe 250 kbytes.
