This assursion holds no water.

Maybe dictatorships have this problem, but I very happily live in
America, and we have the freedom to enjoy our lives in varied, and
creative ways. I have the freedom to use my radios for TCP/IP and I have
the freedom to also use the Internet, also, and to use TCP/IP there, too.
I also can use them together.

There is no point in arguing whether a internet gateway is telephone or
radio, since they are all part radio, part telephone. So that is settled.
Whether Hams that run and use these many gateways are LIDS is in the eye of
the beholder.

As a user of a gateway I see the technology of both Ham Radio and the
telephone being used. Both of these uses are technolgy that is difficult to
understand and get working. Those that make them work properly have a useful
device for the digital Ham. But far from all are working properly.

I have been having trouble forwarding to wb7tls in Tucson, AZ, the
birthplace for packet radio in the US, because the TNC on the gateway is not
working well...:-) Glenn is buying a new TNC for the Gateway and things will
again work.

To my surprise Hy Gain sent me all new plastic parts for my 1975 TH6DXX 6
element beam with a 24 foot boom. So this is making the old beam look like
new again. I can use the beam on packet but having done this before I do not
plan to do it again. If the ARRL will ask for 3 KHz bandwidth for packet on
20 meters I will again try HF packet.

The point of all this is just to clear the air a bit. There have been those
like n5pvl who forcast gloom and the death of digital Ham Radio if gateways
remain in service, and others who correctly say the *REAL* Ham is over 40
and getting 1 year older every year. If Ham Radio is not interesting to
younger people then the hobby will die, along with the Hams.

To ask Hams to stop doing something to save Ham Radio is counter-productive.
The save Ham Radio we need to keep doing something! That something depends
on the capability of the Ham. It has been my experiance that we can forget
most Hams when it comes to tcp/ip with JNOS. It is just too complex or, they
see no fun in having it. I am using linux and the ax25-utils and have
sendmail working over the ax.25 packet radio network. I send to JNOS using
smtp and do my writing/reading on pine. But there are very few to talk to
this way.

Now it is time to walk Daisy, our doberman dog and sample the spring air. It
seems to blowing past us at a brisk rate...:-)

Why?

Aside from being able to tell how many computers you have on your
network, and possibly mounting a denial-of-service attack if your link
is a slow one, I don't really see the problem with ICMP. And it's quite
handy to be able to see ICMP unreachables when you're trying to diagnose
a network problem.

I still dream of the day when firewalls are obsoleted by decent host security.

Define slow :-) I've seen one of the E1's at work flooded by ICMP pings :)

You'll be waiting a while. I prefer our single firewall rather than
attempting
to secure the 33 Unix boxes on the LAN at work, let alone all the windows
type machines. You *need* to proxy/firewall those!

Graham.
