those
'rom' drives couldn't be burnt to contain a like configuration and this
would prove much more reliable than a floppy disk based unit.

The Linux ELKS project holds some promise, and might produce a rommable
version of linux for low end intel hardware which would surely verge on
the most flexible configuration around.

Ron,
to be fair Bruce had a dependency on the Debian project which he has
resolved
by taking on leadership of. Debian-1.1 was in no small part Bruces
doing, and
it will certainly have good Amateur Radio support. Bdale already has
made a
contribution. Its just a matter of people volunteering to formally
support
amateur radio related packages and Linux For Hams will be a reality in
the
form of the Debian distribution.

... and yes, I run Debian.

Steve,
it is really quite trivial. It is just a combination of the kernel
supported compressed root filesystem, ram disk and a bare bones root
filesystem containing sufficient tools to build a device.

The version I have is still a.out and based on a 1.3.* kernel, I haven't
updated it since, but since there does seem some interest I'll update it
and float it around.

Note that the 'yard' utility available in sunsite's Linux/Incomming
directory makes it very easy to build a custom boot boot floppy
with your own kernel and a ramdisk image. Perhaps you could describe
the set of files needed for Bootdisk_Contents and the startup
scripts.

Subject: ETHRAX25 - WinNOS ?

Hi Everyone....

Furthermore to my discussions regarding a version of NOS for Windows.

Somebody (I aplogise I've lost their name and email :-( Pointed me in the
direction of ETHRAX25 (Available on ucsd.edu)

What this software claims to do is to convert ethernet packets to KISS Basicly
(So you can use Netscape, etc), In other words you talk ethernet to tcpip stack
normally BUT this ethrax intercepts and converts ....

All sounds good but under 3.11 with MS TCP/IP Stack installed whenever I
install the driver it locks the TNC up (The TNC Has a KISS Rom in) when you
reset it, it come backs up ok, but when you try and use Windows telnet, etc. it
just sits there and does nothing....

I have loaded the winpkt as it suggests and ax25conf to set callsign
params, etc but no luck ???, There is source provided but it is in Machine code
:-( I know absoultely nothing about Machine code perhaps someone could look at
it and suggest a C version ? :-)

It looked good, but........................... ?? Any ideas ?

Basicly (So you can use Netscape, etc), In other words you talk ethernet to

[snip]

Actually, it works fine. The piece of info you're missing is that
ETHRAX25 must be spoken to with the Packet Driver API. MS TCP speaks the
NDIS API. To use MS TCP with ETHRAX25, you need a shim that converts the
API from NDIS-to-Packet Driver.

Most users of ETHRAX25 use Trumpet as their Win3.1x Winsock and TCP
stack. (Trumpet natively speaks the Packet Driver API.) It replaces MS TCP
and the shim and works great. We have several users on our local 9600-baud
RF lan using this configuration. It has good performance when using telnet,
Eudora (SMTP and POP), and Netscape (HTTP).

BTW, I understand that the author of ETHRAX25 has recently upgraded it
to support multiport KISS, eg. the KPC-9612.

     73,

          Dave
