greetings Brian and every one else,

Forgive me for grandstanding here. Others may flame me if they must.
I hesitated for about ten minutes before printing the invoice along
with my credit card number and snail mailed it to the InterNic.

I've been lurking here and on the Linux-hams list for 6 months
and feel it is about time for me to at least make some small contribution.

To those that would say, we should fight the InterNic on this,
I agree, but the time is too short, we have too much to lose, and the fight
would divert us form the real goal of building an outerNet.

My understanding is that the InterNic is in the hands of the
capitalists these days. Network Solutions, if I remember correctly,
is in charge of registration services until april 1998. I would
certainly like to see a not-for-profit group land the next five
year contract.
Actually the $50 per domain is a clever plan. For the few class A's,
it is a real bargin, class B's, so-so, but it is the many class C's that
are paying the bill. I think the InterNic learnd something here from the IRS.

Anyway, let us get past this til next year.

And Brian, just to be safe, contact the nic in about ten days
and make sure it has been taken care of. Thanks for all you have done.

Only they intend to start changing for that about now instead of having
it effectively funded by various people indirectly.

Gosh, that was awfully nice of you!

I wonder how many others did this? Will they credit the account for more
than one year? Or will their accounting system get screwed up and the extra
money get lost in the shuffle.

Even though the current charge has been paid I think we should still look
into getting it changed to a no charge domain. It would hopefully protect us
from the rates rising in the future.

ps. I hope the .gov's are getting a ton of bills, serves them right for
letting the internic go commercial.

Now there is a concept! Maybe we could just drop the .ORG and create
the .AMPR top-level domain. All we would have to do is convince the
maintainers of the root-level servers to respect this...
