Hi, I am excited about seeing the discussions here. You are over my head,
but can anyone help me with a small technical problem?

I have been using a Baypac BP-2M (and before that a BP-1) TNC for APRS
successfully now for some time. I have an old Pentium P5-66, Windows 98,
and an ICOM IC 02/AT HT, and I use AGW Packet Engine with WinAPRS.

My problem is that I am unable to change the Unproto string. No matter
what I do, the Unproto comes out "APW251 VIA WIDE,WIDE". Even when I
change it in the WinAPRS TNC menu or any other menu, it does not change.

That is not the case when I connect my KAM Multimode TNC to the same setup
(minus the AGW Packet Engine). I am able to change the Unproto string
easily using the WinAPRS TNC menu with KAM parameters.

Has anyone else confronted this problem. Does anyone know parameters that
I need to change. WIDE,WIDE has worked well for me for a long time, but I
wanted to send APRS through the ISS or Satellites, and an Unproto change is
a must.

Thanks for the help,

Jim

Yes, this is a quote from the AGWPE documentation.

"Note that, when using AGWPE, you can't change your packet PATH using the
normal WinAPRS menus (Settings: TNC or Settings: Positions Report Rate).
Instead you must edit the AGWPE_Local.Prt file in your WinAPRS\Ports
directory. The second to last line of this file will have a line that looks
like this:

PATH WIDE,WIDE

You can change the PATH value to any path you'd like. Note that the space
after PATH is not created by the <space> key but by the <TAB> key. Also
note that any PATH changes will not become effective until you save to your
.prt file and then restart WinAPRS."

Go to the "Sky and Telescope" website. LYRIS won't let me include the
URL but the path is observing, objects, sun

Gents,

I don't know if we can use this, but I have written a perl script that
extracts callsign and email address from the aprs stream.
It then is presented to you in a table. You just click on the email address
to send one.
To keep your contact details up to speed all you would need to do is beacon
your current email address.
I would like to also suck out web pages.

Like a live APRS directory of who is who ?

Can we use it ?

Folks,

Andy is quite correct, I should have been more careful with my earlier
post.

A welder's "googles" (for gas welding) are just very dark "sun glasses" and
do *nothing* to protect your eyes from dangerous light ! Don't even think
of using those as an option.

A welder's "helmet" (for arc welding) *might* be a possibility, as most
helmets approved for use in Canada, are electronically, self-adjusting; and
must meet certain Canadian Health and Safety requirements. Our
"requirements" may not be the same as in your country(s).

I am not an Opthalmologist, and it was only under the suggestion of my own
doctor, (for our last total eclipse), that he made that recommendation.
(That was of course, for brief glimpses, as the event was happening.) I
wear contact lenses, and the low end (I.R.) can be a real problem.

Personal experience ... we found that we got a better view of what was
going on, not with the welder's helmet; but with a simple "pin-hole" in a
shoe box.

YMMV; but do NOT do anything that might cause damange to your eye-sight !
IF in doubt, follow Andy's web-site suggestion.

Yes, we can use it - but then so can every spam addy sucking bot web
crawling spider out there as well.

If you want to eliminate the presence of email addresses in all APRS
packets - impliment this otherwise good idea and allow easy public access.

I for one will VERY much appreciate plenty of heads up warning so I can
remove all email addys and web addresses from any of my stations ahead of
time.

Harvesting email addy's from web pages is one of the spammers FAVORITE
methods - it's so easy to do.

Cool idea - just sucks it's just the nature of the internet today that
makes it a risky impimentation.
