Yes they can be used for UIDIGI, but you must first look in the back of the
manual and convert the TNC for NetROM / TheNet operation to turn it back
into a TNC2 compatible. It will work fine. There are a couple headers that
are configured with jumpers to replace an IC or two. Basically, this replaces
the multplexers to hard select their configuration.

Hang in there! System should be simple, people should be smart.
Thank you for your continuing efforts in behalf of many of us amateurs who
want to see APRS benefit many. Is is so easy to fall down the slippery
slope of allowing "machines" to govern our lives in way too many
details. It is a path that is ripe with problems...... all regarding the
fundamental issue of "control" over ones self actions. But, hey, then you
have to be personally "responsible" for your own actions, if you don't
"delegate" to a machine!

Dick prepared a WEB page that actively shows all IGates live that are
using the recommended DIAMOND-I IGate icon for permanent IGates.
I just zoomed in and see about 70 across the USA with some very notable
population densities without one. More than likely, this is not because
it is not there, but because it is not using the receommended GATE icon
with "I" overlay.
Since the permanence of IGates is part of our national reliabilty, now
might be a good time to check your area and see if all "permanent" IGates
are using the right ICON...
Just a small thing, but they all add up.

One of the outstanding strong points we Amateur Radio operators provide
is our wide ranging distributed system of resources. Any time we put all
our eggs in one basket, such as core central servers, we really limit the
potential for what we can do.
The magic of any APRS application being able to simply and easily
contribute to the infrastructure as a whole is a really good thing.
Of course those applications need to be continuously improved, tuned
and updated. That's the progress we need.

if not, what's the proper string to set that up

What about us that use our stations as something else? KF4OTN-3 is at our
EOC and has its' symbol showing as such. It is also an I-Gate, though.
Maybe we can start looking at stations that are sending the I-Gate status
texts or would it be better to change the symbol?

Agreed, Eric.
My KG4YZY-10 station is not only a I-Gate, but it is also a wide area digi.
I know of other stations that serve dual roles as well. Seems alot of
I-Gates ran by folks here in Florida are also weather stations. I'd say
only 1 out of 5 perhaps even has high as 10 in the Tampa area use the IGate
icon as their primary symbol.
I agree, IGate status messages make the most sence, but I don't think all
client software produces them. Not 100% sure though.

This has come up before... how do you specify what the station is, versus
what it does? I'm a big fan of bitmapped capabilities fields... two
characters of base64 encoding would give you 12 true/false values you could
use to indicate igate capability, wide-n digi, text messaging, and so on.
Of course, this just takes us back to the problem that it's never simple to
add fields to APRS messages, and trying to do it in such a way that it
doesn't break anything just adds to the kludginess of the formats.

The ICON for a permanent IGate is the GATEWAY ICON with an "I" overlay.
The Gateway ICON is the "&" character. So combined, we say the syntax is
"I&"

It should show the symbol that best represents its normal use. In this
case, if that particular box and callsign is for APRS comms with the EOC,
then it should use the EOC icon...

Unless this is a 24/7 staffed EOC I would suggest that the "normal use"
here is as an IGATE that uses the EOC's infrastructure. I think the EOC
ICON should be reserved for open activated EOC's that are capable of
receiving traffic IE: there is a live human available to handle traffic in
and out. Using the IGATE ICON helps travelers find IGATES. The more
visible IGATES the more we can cut down on the need for long paths in an
attempt to reach an IGATE in the next county.
