That would be nice to have a snowflake on my toast. However, instead
of complaining about the black toast when it burns, we'll complain
about how blue it is when it crashes:

I like that idea a lot better than the current IGATE messaging scheme.
Leave it up to a couple of central message servers to monitor the IS, queue
the messages, and direct them to the appropriate IGATE. Too much smarts in
the IGATEs, and too much opportunity for stuff to go wrong.

Why don't we invent a message server.
It has a retry scheme, and if you off air, it does not get so aggressive,
but if it hears you are on air, it attempts to re-send your outstanding
messages to you ?
And if it hears from you, in the aprs stream it would know which way to send
the messages out ?
You could request if there are messages for you as well .
They could die off after 7 days if not delivered.
Food for thought

I don't see the point in this. As far as I know there are settings the
the current APRS software packages that when used as an Igate you can say
what stations that Igate will pass to RF. As far as I understand all of
them have safeguards that prohibit local traffic hear via Inet to be
retransmitted. In other words the system is already in place why reinvent
the wheel?

I disagree. Messaging on APRS is handled by the sending station, period.
Many client software packages will retry a message for a certain period of
time and then make the message dormant. If the receiving station is seen
again (on RF or the Internet), the message becomes active again. Even if
the client kills the message after a certain number of attempts, the
operator is informed of this and may resend the message at their desire.
An IGate is simply a portal to stations heard directly on RF. The message
gating mechanism is probably the simplest part of the IGate code. While
the q algorithm shows some IGates, not all servers run the q algorithm and
not all IGates support the qAR or I construct. Even if they did, there is
no routing mechanism in APRS-IS. This recommendation would do nothing to
reduce the "opportunity for something to go wrong". In fact, it would
remove the immediate feedback currently implemented and add a new layer for
"something to go wrong".
What is basically being proposed here is a SMS system on top of the IM
system currently implemented. Instead of being operated in lieu of the
current system, nothing would prevent someone from setting up an SMS server
for APRS where someone could send a message to, say SMSSRV, with the
destination station in the text (similar to sending an email to EMAIL).
This would allow someone to "leave a message" for a station not currently
on APRS.
KISS.

Interestingly, all APRSdos symbols are vector drawn. That is why
Hurricanes and weather symbols can be large and others small. THey could
even scale so that as you zoom in on an ambiguous position, the symbol
could scale to cover the area of ambiguity. At that point I got lazy and
so when you zoom below the area at which the ambiguity is larger than the
symbol, then I just draw a circle of ambiguity and it scales...
whatever...

but adding all that smarts to the network violates the KISS principle and
it also violates the HAM radio common practice of wanting to read the
mail... You may not like it, but it works perfectly fine now, becasue it
depends on NO smarts.
The current algorithm simply says, if an IGate hears a station locally on
RF, then it takes responsiblity to deliver any messages from APRS-IS to
him. What could be simpler? KISS

EXACTLY! Thanks! That is what I have been saying all along from my
first post. That was all this homepport idea was about in the first
place. It was codifying that existing fact and encouraging travelers to
use it so that we could cut down on long paths from long roving mobiles.
I only added the suggestion that the user should be able to add himself to
the local IGate's list without having to bother the local IGate sysop.
Anything in HAM radio that depends on the constant attention of operators
to "manage" other people's needs will eventually dry up as those doing the
managing find they have other things to do in life.
THus I simply want to be able to originate a message to MY local IGate
that says "add me to your existing gate-to-RF" list.

Can a MFJ 1278B be used as a UIDIGI TNC? I have the eprom programming
capability. Some folks in the area have a couple of MFJ 1278B TNCs and
want to use one for a digi near the Shiloh National Military Park.
